Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Kiel


Prof Geoff Kiel has extensive experience as a director, management consultant, manager and academic researcher.

As well as being the Chairman of Strategic Governance, he was the founder of Effective Governance Pty Ltd, a significant Brisbane based
management consultancy which specializes in governance and strategy consulting for clients.

Geoff Kiel had an extensive academic career. He was the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Dean, School of Business at the University of Notre Dame Australia and prior to this appointment for many years he was Professor of Management and Head of the Graduate School of Management at the University of Queensland. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Queensland. He is the only person to have chaired both
academies in the management and marketing disciplines. He was Chair of ANZAM and of ANZMAC, having been instrumental in the founding of both organisations. He also played a major role in the founding of one of Australia’s two private universities in his role as the Planning
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Notre Dame Australia. He is an Honorary Professor at Australian Catholic University and teaches
post-graduate classes on governance at that university.

Over the past 40 years he has combined his academic work with the provision of advice as a management consultant. In the 1990s he was Joint Managing Director of the major marketing consultancy, Marketshare Pty Ltd. He has advised in excess of 300 boards and management teams on strategy, marketing and governance in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and North America. He has been a director and chairman of several companies in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. As well as chairing ANZMAC and ANZAM, he has sat on the Board of Directors (Council) of the University of Notre Dame Australia, Megami Ltd, a partially owned subsidiary of MIM Ltd and Compass Housing Services Ltd. He is currently a Director of the Mater Medical Research Institute Ltd and Chair of the supervisory board of B&R Enclosures Pty Ltd.

He is acknowledged as an international expert on corporate governance and governance research having published over 30 refereed papers on this topic in leading international journals and at major governance conferences. He has facilitated many courses over the past 25 years for the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Prof Kiel is the author of several books including the best selling ‘Boards that Work’ and ‘Board Director and CEO Evaluation’, both published by McGraw Hill, ‘Directors at Work’ published by Thomson Reuters, and ‘Reviewing Your Board’ published in 2018 by the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He also authored ‘A Compliance Handbook for the ASX Corporate Governance Principles’ published in conjunction with the AICD.
